The Betterjournal.
Built for between sessions.

Betterjournal gives therapy clients a private place to reflect, track mood, and complete guided work between appointments. It is a better journaling experience because it is built around the therapeutic relationship, not despite it.

Private by default. Clinically connected. Always free for clients.

What Betterjournal gives you

Betterjournal gives you everything
generic journaling apps were never built to do.

Between-session journaling

Journal between sessions,
not just during them.

Most of what matters in therapy happens in the six days between appointments. Betterjournal gives you a private place to capture it, so nothing gets lost before the next session.

Mood tracking

Mood tracking that means something.

Track daily. Your clinician sees the arc before each session, not just how you feel the morning you walk in.

Clinician connection

The layer generic apps don't have.

Your clinician assigns homework, sees what you share, and arrives prepared. That connection is what makes it a better journal.

Guided prompts

Prompts sent by your clinician.

Thought records, exercises, reflections, delivered straight to your app. No PDFs, no emails, no forgetting.

Private by default

Nothing shared unless you say so.

Every entry is yours. You choose what your clinician sees, entry by entry, before each session.

Worth saying clearly

Not a therapist. Not crisis support. Just a better journal.

Betterjournal is not telehealth or a replacement for your clinician. It is the structured space between appointments. It is better because it is built around your therapy, not just alongside it.

Why Betterjournal exists

Most clients see their therapist once a week. Many only manage biweekly or monthly (the limit of what their benefits cover). Either way, a lot happens between sessions. Most of it gets lost, or arrives Wednesday in a half-remembered summary. Nothing was built for the work that happens in between.

Journaling apps are built for the individual. Therapy tools are built for the practice. Neither was built for the space between sessions. So we built Betterjournal.

Generic journaling apps

Built for solo reflection. No clinician workflow, no assignment tools, no session context. The clinician never sees the work done between appointments.

Messaging and practice tools

Built for scheduling, billing, and communication. Not designed for reflective journaling, structured homework, or client-led session preparation.

Built for clinicians

Everything you need between sessions.

Assign structured between-session work

Send journaling prompts, homework, exercises, and tools directly to clients. They complete it on their own time, at their own pace.

Review what clients choose to share

See mood trends, homework responses, and journal entries, showing only what the client has chosen to share.

Arrive to every session prepared

Each session brief surfaces the week's patterns so you walk in with context, not catch-up questions. Less recap, more depth.

Support continuity, without being live

Betterjournal fits into an existing practice as an asynchronous between-session layer. No monitoring obligation. No live presence required.

How it works

Simple for clinicians.
Simple for clients.

Five steps from invitation to between-session support.

01

Clinician requests access

Complete a short practice setup. Betterjournal is invite-only for clinicians to ensure the platform stays purpose-built.

02

Clinician invites the client

Send a client invite by email. The client creates a free account and connects to the practice. No technical setup required.

03

Client journals and checks in

Clients write, log their mood, complete assigned homework, and use support tools. All between appointments, at their own pace.

04

Client controls what's shared

Nothing is visible to the clinician by default. The client decides which entries, check-ins, and responses to share.

05

Both arrive more prepared

Clinicians review a session brief before the appointment. Clients come in with clearer starting points. Less recap. More depth.

One platform

Two experiences. One clear workflow.

For clients

Journal. Check in. Stay connected.

A private space to reflect, complete assigned work, and prepare for the next session. On the client's terms.

The client experience

A private space that travels with you.

Open the app on a Tuesday night when something's sitting with you. Write it down. Choose whether to share it. Your clinician sees only what you decide to show them. Nothing flows through automatically..

Homework comes from your clinician, directly into the app. Daily check-ins take under a minute. When session day arrives, you're not starting from scratch. You have something to say..

4 journaling modes Daily mood check-in Assigned homework Session prep view Selective sharing Always free for clients

The client app is always free. No subscription, no paywall, no hidden fees.

What felt worth holding onto today?
1. One thing that softened the day:
The breathing exercise before the standup. First time in weeks it actually worked.
2. Why it mattered:
I didn't spiral. Just noticed and kept going.

The clinician experience

Walk into every session already knowing the week.

Before Thursday's session, Betterjournal generates a brief: mood trend for the week, homework completed, any entries the client chose to share. You open it at your desk. In 90 seconds, you know what matters.

Between sessions, assign a Thought Record, send a prompting question, or leave a note. No live monitoring. No obligation to respond in real time. Just a structured layer that supports the work you're already doing.

Privacy and trust

Designed with privacy-first workflows.

Private by default. Clinicians only see what clients explicitly choose to share. Nothing is sent automatically: not journal entries, not check-ins, not homework responses.

Private by default

Nothing is shared with the clinician unless the client explicitly chooses to share it. Clinician visibility is determined entirely by client sharing and consent controls.

Asynchronous only

Betterjournal is not a live messaging platform. Reviews happen on your own schedule. There is no obligation to monitor between sessions or respond in real time.

Not a telehealth platform

Betterjournal is a between-session support tool. It is not designed to deliver, replace, or replicate therapy. Therapy sessions take place outside this application.

Built for private practice

Betterjournal is structured to support the existing relationship between a registered clinician and their client. It adds a between-session layer without changing how you practise.

What Betterjournal is not. Betterjournal is not a crisis service, not a therapy provider, and not a replacement for professional care. It does not monitor clients in real time and is not designed for clinical assessment. It is a private reflection and between-session support tool designed to work alongside therapy, not deliver it.

If you or your client are in crisis, call or text 988 (Canada Suicide Crisis Helpline) or contact your local emergency services.

Pricing

Flat fees. No per-client charges. Ever.

A private-practice session in Canada typically costs $180–250. Betterjournal costs less than one and supports every appointment on your calendar for the entire month.

Betterjournal is in private beta. Founding clinicians may receive early-access pricing before public launch.

Straight answers.

Common questions.

Betterjournal is a specific tool for a specific purpose. Here is what it is, and what it is not.

No. Betterjournal is a between-session support tool. Therapy sessions take place outside this platform, with your registered clinician. Betterjournal supports the six days between appointments. It does not deliver, replace, or replicate therapy.
No. Everything is private by default. Journal entries, check-ins, and homework responses are visible to your clinician only when you explicitly choose to share them. Nothing is sent without your direct action.
No. Betterjournal is not monitored for crisis situations in real time and should not be used in an emergency. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 (Canada Suicide Crisis Helpline) or contact your local emergency services.
Not yet. Betterjournal is currently in private beta for clinicians and clients in Canada. The platform is built around Canadian privacy law (PIPA, HIA) and private-practice workflows. International access is not available at this time.
Betterjournal is built around reflection and session preparation, not real-time communication. It provides a structured journaling space, clinician-assigned homework, mood tracking, and automatic session briefs. Messaging is asynchronous by design. This is not a chat platform.
No. Betterjournal is not an EMR, scheduling tool, or billing platform. It sits alongside your existing practice tools and handles only the between-session layer: journaling, homework, check-ins, and session briefs. It does not store clinical notes, treatment plans, or diagnostic records.
Yes. Clinicians can send homework assignments, journaling prompts, and guided exercises directly to a client's app. Clients complete the work on their own time. You can see responses, but only what the client chooses to share.
Yes, entirely. Nothing in Betterjournal is shared automatically. Every journal entry, check-in, and homework response is private by default. Clients actively choose what to share before each session, or share nothing at all. Clinicians can only see what has been explicitly sent to them.
Betterjournal was designed with Alberta's regulatory framework in mind (specifically PIPA, HIA, and CAP's Use of Technology Guideline), but the platform is available to registered clinicians across Canada. If you practise in another province, your professional college's guidelines on technology-assisted care apply.
Clinicians can complete onboarding in under 10 minutes: confirm your registration details, review the platform boundaries, and invite your first client. Clients receive a link, download the app, and complete a short consent flow before their first session.
All data is stored on Canadian servers and encrypted with AES-256 per client-clinician pair. Betterjournal does not sell, rent, or share client data with third parties. If a client revokes consent, their encryption key is rotated and existing data becomes permanently unreadable. See the Privacy page for full details.
Yes, always. Clients never pay. Betterjournal charges clinicians a flat monthly fee and the client app is included at no charge. There are no per-client fees, no tiers, and no paywalls for clients. Charging per client would create the wrong incentive.
